Obsessive Compulsive Disorder or OCD
Many people feel comforted when their environment is orderly and tidy.  However, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, or OCD is a condition that causes severe anxiety in those who are affected. OCD involves both obsessions and compulsions.  Common obsessions include worrying about germs or getting sick, extreme fear about bad things occurring, feeling that things must be just so or recurrent thoughts that are disturbing or unwanted.  Examples of compulsions include excessive checking, repeating actions, ordering or arranging things, excessive washing or cleaning, reassurance seeking or excessive mental reviewing. Individuals may feel that engaging in compulsions will somehow prevent bad things from occurring.  These symptoms typically occur repeatedly and feel out of the control of the individual.  These symptoms can be so time consuming they negatively impact school, work, family time or peer interactions.  OCD is usually not something that you can simply "snap out of."  However, OCD is very treatable with a specific form of evidence-based therapy and if needed medication.
