Stress can affect information processing and create conditions for cognitive distortions, overvalued ideas and sensory misperceptions. When individuals begin experiencing a different version of reality that interferes with their functioning it is important to seek intervention. The most well-known symptoms of psychosis are false beliefs or suspicions of others, hearing voices or seeing visions and disorganized or jumbled thoughts. Psychosis can occur with many psychiatric conditions such as bipolar disorder, depression, schizophrenia, PTSD, substance use among others. Early intervention of psychosis is critical and longer duration of untreated psychosis is associated with poorer short and long-term consequences. Treatment with a multi modal approach has been associated with dramatically improved functioning and well-being.
